On the Inside

Love begins with "self"; sadly so many of us suffer in our relationships with others because of the pain that resides within our being. Terrie Williams takes an in-depth look at the root causes, symptoms and solutions that surround depression for African Americans. Known to many as a "celebrity" publicist, Terrie proves herself knowledgeable as a clinical socialist, whose research proves astounding.

In Twinkling of an Eye

By: Muhammed Akil
5/5/08

THE OBAMA PHENOMENA. 16 months ago, really, did you see this coming? Personally, I was going to vote for John Edwards. He seemed to be a “non-toxic” enough for me and would be a welcomed presidential change from the curious suspicion I always had for Bill Clinton and the amazement I still have for George W. Bush’s simplemindedness and gall. Could it be that George W. is autistic or is a savant: so stupid that he’s brilliant?

But really, who saw Barack Obama coming? The “Presumptive Presidential Nominee” of the Democratic Party is more than we imagined. When we first saw him we thought: Ok, it’s admirable that this young brotha threw his hat in the ring appearing as “Presidential” as other candidate. He’s certainly a Black man…but NO rhyming, fiery, clever phrases that only a Black man could bring to a presidential campaign (no offense, Jesse and Al). But, initially he just seemed to be a skinny, left-handed brotha who would garner some national exposure for himself. Then, in the twinkling of an eye – BOOM! – The United States of American might have its first Black President – As old folks would say, “Oh Lord and Sweet Jesus. There must be a God!”

In the quiet and dark times of the collective Black consciousness I am hearing an ongoing whisper in the spiritual ether that is simply saying, “I’m damn proud of Barack Obama”. And it is not simply because he is Black (albeit that is part of it). What makes it even better is that he convincingly out-performed ALL OF THEM: Hillary, McCain, Edwards, Guliani, Thompson, and all the other “ usual ‘white’ suspects”.

A few things for us rank-and-file Black folk to acknowledge as we measure his success: First, it will not be Mr. Obama’s responsibility to stop Black teenage pregnancy, recycle the Black dollar, stop the profuse littering in Black neighborhoods, stop Black on Black violence and Black domestic violence, and other issues that have been plaguing Black communities for decades. That is, and will always be, your and my responsibility. Yes, he may be able to inspire and loosen up some federal funds at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue BUT local residents that have to pull the majority of the load in our neighborhoods - the original and perpetual Ground Zero. There are no messiahs coming for us (save Jesus, religiously speaking). Be your own messiah!

And lastly, for those concerned about Mr. Obama’s safety, RELAX. When he becomes President his security will be as tight as a wet suit on a diver. Plus, all of Black America will be praying for him daily; and you know how we believe we have a special relationship with God (smile).

Mr. Obama, you did the damn thing. You and Michelle …That’s a good look.

NOT YOUR DAY

by Alita Carter

Dear Family and Friends,

Please understand, we have weighed our decision to marry with careful consideration and appreciate your support and willingness to participate in our forthcoming day. Given the pressures of our jobs, our finances and making one of the biggest decisions of our life, we ask that you understand our position and not our demeanor when we remind you for the last time, "It's Not Your Day".

With Love,

The Bride and Groom

If the rest of us don't learn to control our tongues and impulses to participate in the wedding planning of our loved ones, we will soon read the above note included in invitations to come. Let's hope not. But really, we only need offer an opinion when asked. Be very weary about your response however, because the blushing bride whom you've know since playing double-dutch as children, can very well turn into a brashy-brutal chick you've never witnessed.

God bless the gracious groom, who'll do everything in his power to avoid questions about "what's going on with the wedding"?, "ask your fiancé if I could..." and all the many questions about what his wife-to-be is doing for the ceremony. Then, he has to entertain the notion of all the guests his parents and siblings want to invite, that his fiancé will cut off the list. A wedding feud is brewing; now the anticipated day of joy becomes a nightmare in the making.

Friends, this day is beyond you. I know you want to participate and you have ideas and know the best caterer in the whole world, but again, your insistent well-meaning ideas are truly a nuisance for a bride trying to figure out where to sit everyone at the reception. The bride has to now consider your feelings when she hands you back your suggestion. See where we're going here. "The Day" is already overwhelming, stressful, and scary at best. Those of us who serve as the supportive extension of the bride and groom must learn to practice a higher level of decorum in matters like these. The following is a list of things to consider that will insure the bride and groom appreciate your support, because you've given them the gift of peace.

1. Keep Your Opinion to Yourself - Even if you're asked, think, I mean really think before you speak. And always ask "well what do you think?" or "is this the direction or idea you had in mind?" Always place it back on bride and groom. You never want to be responsible for anything that will impact the outcome of their wedding. Your name will be attached to the things that went wrong, more so, than the things that went right.

2. Make Yourself Available - A simple note included in your RSVP, letting the bride and groom know, should they need any assistance, feel free to let you know, is a welcoming breath of fresh air. True, there maybe a receiving line of brides maids and grooms men a mile-long, and believe it or not; every one of them could have an "issue" that doesn't allow them to handle some of the little things. Access to extra help is always appreciated.

3. Keep Your Word - Do what you say you're going to do. The bride and groom know they cannot possibly pull this off by themselves. So as family and friends, we are expected to pick up the weight, particularly when we volunteer. Don't arrive late to the fittings or fail to get the information about the florist you recommended in ample time. Once you say "no problem", people hope it won't be a problem, truthfully their really nervous you might not pull it off. Prove them wrong and keep your word. As simple as that.

4. Respect the Invitation - It's very important that you reply within the time frame noted on the invitation and honor the request of the bride and groom. If they are limited in space and can only offer you and a guest, please don't ask if your mother can come as a third party. Everyone is accounted for and expenses have begun to run high. Some couples, even those with children from a previous relationship, may choose to restrict children from the ceremony. Don't take it personal, just make arrangements to be there or not. The limitations of the invited guests have been considered, but the bride and groom have decided what works best for them and their taste, because..."It is THEIR DAY".

5. Consider What You Do a Gift - Lastly, no matter what your participation level is; financial, consul, or other wise, consider it a gift. And gifting does not entitle you to overrun the ceremony or make the bride and groom feel indebted to your "graciousness". The reward of your gift is the look of joy in the eyes of the newly married couple. This is more so directed to the immediate family who are more so in a position to exert authority over the marrying couple.

Without you, this wouldn't be the special occasion the couple envisioned. And because of you, the bride and groom want you to enjoy their day and participate in the celebration of the most monumental event of their lives. The pressure and details of the festivities already lends itself to tons of remarks and unnecessary criticism during the preparing of a joyous celebration. Support the couple; play the part given you and perform it well.

Arts & Culture

We're almost convinced that if any place is filled with the richness of our historic tapestry, Philadelphia reins supreme. The African American Philadelphia Museum remains a focal point and holder of this cultural fiber in Philly. An active museum with a vast calendar, exhibits, and classes; be prepared. See what's playing over at The Freedom Theatre, formed in 1966 and still thriving; where many notables have graced they stages. As with the music in Philly, dance, has its own stage. The Philadanco dance company, for 34 years has traveled the world before sold-out audiences. A must see.

Relax & Leisure

If you don't do anything else in Philly, you will walk; long enough to see the sites, tastes and sounds. Why not schedule a treatment at the Spa
Bavu
, which has a delightful offering of treatments to choose from. Step away from the typical scene and head towards the Mt. Airy area of Philadelphia to North by North West; a unique place that offers an array of poets, dj's, even Motown dance parties; along with dining options. If you don't want to venture too far from the "main land", by all means get a table at Ortlieb's

Eats & Sips

Who wants cheesesteaks in a city that offers the entire world? Head over to this popular Caribbean spot known as the Jerk Hut, and you'll be blown away. Don't overlook the Latin influence and presence in Philly which is reflected in the food. You don't want the same old stuff, neither do we, that's why the Alma de Cuba was the perfect choice. You may want to try more than your stomach can take. Like the Latin flair, Africa lives in Philly. For the best Eritirean/Ethopian cuisine, Philly has always been our favorite; that's why Dahlak Eritren Bar is well rooted in our psyche.

Arts & Culture

The Bay Area proves its richness in arts and while providing the backdrop for many exciting happenings. Case in point, the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre continues to wow audiences with classic plays and original plays, consistently. Speaking of consistent, the Thelma Harris Gallery in Oakland has become the premier gallery for the introduction of emerging talents. You'll never be disappointed. The Museum of African Diaspora in San Francisco does a fabulous job of keeping the culture flowing. Feel free to view the museum's event calendar before visiting, there are so many options; from exhibits to film screening to lectures. Everyone wins.

Relax & Leisure

You can't stay in all day with so much to do and discover. We suggest checking into the Ethnic Arts Dance calendar calendar, which features dance classes in West African Dance, Hip Hop, Jazz etc., its more fun than you know. We suggest keeping the energy going, since you're in yoga central, but it doesn't have to be boring; spice up the yoga routine with bikram yoga at the Funky Door Yoga. Need a good massage and skin treatment, you're in for a treat at Ananda's Skin Spa, where you'll be treated to an organic facial. Time to show of that glow Head over to Yoshi's; whether in Oakland or San Fran to get jazz, food and style in two locations.

Eats & Sips

We LOVE!! the Farmer Brown restaurant for everything it offers and everything it stands for. Rarely do we hand out "love" like this, but we had to. Farmer Brown supports African-American and local farmers; using healthier options to create the best Southern cuisine around. When people get it right, they don't have to spend all day in the kitchen. The Selected Poems of Nikki Giovanni by Nikki

Nikki makes it so plain. What would poetry and life be like without the words of Nikki Giovanni. We appreciate the classic included in this collection, but it also introduces many soul-stirring-thought-provoking pieces; one can only be lost in the moment. Her influence ranges before and beyond – we embrace her because she embraces each and everyone one of us. There is nothing more essential; in reading Nikki, you’re reading and seeing yourself.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X & Alex Haley

We’ve heard the story a million ways; this book remains the most life changing for most men and certainly many women. For many, this is their first introduction to manhood and transformation on paper…walking through the trials and perils of Malcolm’s life. Certainly life without The Autobiography of Malcolm X, would be unimaginable in this world today. This is a starter read for anyone not familiar with African American history and a re-read for many of us who’ve read hundreds of books since this introduction.

The Street by Ann Petry

Those who know…KNOW. The Street, originally published in 1946, believe it or not, is probably the most poignant look at urban life and living written. Given the realness of the subject matter, most readers are incredible surprised by the writing style and how 60 years later, it speaks to the problems we still face today. The characters are people we know in our daily lives as we take a look back.

Seal - “Soul”

We understand the depth of Seal’s overall talent, but if you didn’t, when he dropped Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”, you knew. Not only did Seal release the song around President Obama’s election, but he released his soul into something that could be easily unappreciated, given how we all feel about remakes. But wait, the entire album offers the best covers you’ll ever hear. Seal breaks down James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s World and Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes’ “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”. This is really up there.

Heather Headley – “Audience of One”

WE LOVE THIS ALBUM. If there was every anything more beautiful, it would have to be on canvas. This is a spiritual outpouring Heather Headley gives as she sings praise and appreciates her many blessings. Audience of One offers calming tones and soothing sounds to relax our minds in this fast-paced world. When she sings “I Need Thee...” we know to whom she sings. It will be a favorite and a classic for years to come. Definitely in heavy rotation.

India.Arie - “Testimony: Vol 2, Love & Politics”

This album is absolute truth. The artistic versatility is proven. Its not a-typical and we like it. The album’s offerings are vast enough to please audiences across the board still allowing all the music to represent one piece of work. Did India.Arie do a Sade on us with “Pearls”? Why, yes she did. And it is beyond words; leading right off into our favorite “River Rise” and “Yellow”. For a new listener to India, this album is a great introduction and they are certain to become life long fans. Exquisite.

They Came Before Columbus by Ivan Van Sertima

If ever there was a necessary read in one’s library, They Came Before Columbus is THE celebrated classic of the late Ivan Van Sertima. Sertima takes readers on a well-researched journey to answer the existence and relationship between Africans and early Americans long before the arrival of Christopher Columbus. This book poses the questions, and gives an in-depth study into the possibility of early Africans in the Caribbean and the Americas. Certainly a book that has broaden the horizons for thousands.

Wildflowers by Lyah Beth Leflore

As a high-power owner of a publicity firm, the life of 35-year old Chloe Davis Michaels is definitely one to admire. This accomplished woman feels like given her age, “now” is the time. Time to be married and “settle down”, and although her family has reservations regarding her choice of a mate, Chloe rushes forth to the steps of matrimony. Life takes a serious turn for the worse, given the haste. Wildflowers takes us on a journey through Chloe’s mistakes; returning her home as she seeks refuge, guidance, answers and love. Chloe finds she not alone in her crisis and that as much as she needs the Davis women, they seem to need each other more. This story is one of familiarity yet written so poignantly that we feel a sense of attachment to every woman. A true page turner.

Cross Country by James Patterson

We can go on about James Patterson’s thrillers novels centered on his featured character Alex Cross. The African American detective-psychologist, who’s one of the country’s leading experts on crime solving and serial killers. Although Cross Country has been on the bookshelves for a minute, we took our time reading Patterson’s 14th Cross thriller. Through several recommendations, we see how Patterson has taken Alex Cross from DC to Africa to solve a heinous murder that leads to pursuits unknown to most people. This is so James Bond meets Shaft in Africa, we had to give it one last plug

Chico Debarge : "Addiction"

Don't call it a come back...call it about time. It’s about time real music has graced the scene again, without all the convoluted mess of music to shift through. Chico brings us Addiction, a telling abstract story of the battles with drugs, sex and emotional high's and lows. He tells the story allowing the audience to develop their own interpretations and their own identities to each story. Amazingly Beautiful!!!

Joe: "Signature"

So eloquently put. Indeed Joe has added his signature to the sixth collection of music created by the R&B melody-hit-maker. You know we're right. Joe consistently gives you exactly "Joe" - each and every time. This latest release provides greater testament to his ability to create classic hit after classic hit. What a wonderful signature.

Maiysha: "This Much Is True"

There is no doubt that Maiysha’s “This Much Is True” hosts a sound that can be describe like Corrine Bailey Rae meets Jamiroquai. Maiysha is undeniably a talented writer/artist out of Brooklyn with a unique style and versatility. This album is “vibe-central”, whether cleaning house or making dinner; your in good company. This much is true.

Your Friend Is Getting Married...Aren't You Happy By A. Carter

In my previous article on "Its Not Your Day", I attempted to get the overly-aggressive-anxious-to do everything family member/friend to understand when to put the breaks on. This piece touched on our unnecessary opinions and what we deem perfect for the bride and groom's big day...thus emphasizing the fact…"Its Not Your Day".

After the article, I received an email from a reader asking “how to handle one’s engaged friends acting real high-post around their upcoming wedding nuptials and how is one suppose to respond to this behavior”. I say it all the time...funerals and weddings; bring out the worst in people. It’s too many emotions, too much spotlight, and not everyone knows how to adjust. Sadly, these events always seem to bring some feelings masked or hidden. My question to the writer was well, why shouldn't they be? Can't a person be excited for themselves? Can't you be excited with them? If no, or maybe, is your answer, and an emphatic yes does not come off your tongue...trust there is a deeper issue at hand.

Bottom line is, if you're genuinely happy for your friends; their 15 minutes of fame and all the bridezillas ways, will not deter you one bit. But if your friend really gets on your nerves or there is even a hint of jealousy, envy, bitterness and resentment...like dust, it will rise. This isn't to say you don't love your friends, it’s just to say, feelings are real and sometimes you can't determine when the ugly monster will show his head. Check yourself fast and in a hurry. Why are you angry? And why do you care so much?

If you're angry with your friend for no apparent reason other than the fact that she/he is getting married; then it is time to look at the man (woman) in the mirror. This goes for single and married friends. It’s not uncommon for single friends, unfortunately this leans more towards women feeling like their being left behind in single life. Sometimes people are in perpetual unspoken competition with one another - thus feeling like one person is outshining the other. Single woman are not alone, the already married friends may start acting real “iffy” - especially if she put herself on a pedestal above you and her current mate isn't one worth keeping...trust, she begins comparing your wedding plans to what she had. I know, crazy right? Again, check yourself. Guys on the other hand, are much better about this friend and getting married stuff. Their less attached to their homegirl or boy getting on with life and can't be so bother with feeling offended so easily.

But women have to be reminded from time to time. Ladies, your homegirl of 15 years-ace in the hole-club hopping-social-butterfly fluttering will be different...at least for now. Also your homeboy-50 grand-roadie to the end, will be different...at least for now. As a new couple or a newly engaged or married couple, these two people will have to spend a great deal of time invested into each other. Not you. Their relationship with you should already be tight. Hell they already know you, and they don't have to live with you. Understand, they may not return your calls as often, can't hang out as previously scheduled. Once the couple is settled into "couple life", I call it, they'll be plenty time for you again. Please believe, those two will need a break - and ladies night, or night with the fellas will be fast approaching. You won't have to call them; they'll be calling you, asking what's going on? Where's the party at?

Relax, your friends are getting married, aren't you happy?

Retiring Work...Creating Art

Before Rafer Leito retired after 20 years as a Corrections Officer on Riker's Island in New York City this year, he gave plenty of thought to what to do next. However, these days this husband and full-time father has his hands full with community development and a 5 year old daughter; who've certainly answered the question "what to do next".

Since creating and co-founding MAARUF Strategies Inc.; a think-tank that believes that local business house the true spirit of community life and the promise of renewal. MAARUF hopes to create opportunity inspite of the economy. Knowing we can't afford to lose our local shops. As an intiative to community development, MAARUF designs activities for local youngsters that tie them into local community builders. In addtion, Rafer has created a blog dedicated to BedSty children and thanks to his efforts and encouragment of the arts amoungst the children in the neigborhood, even his own little Bahiyyah's, has sold her first art piece, what a way to be involved.

It Doesn't Take Much to Have Fun

Believe it our not, it a simple thing. During our little excursions to Martha's Vineyard, Venice Beach, Jersey Shore and Miami Beach; we already know we'll spend all day on the beach soaking up sun. There are no local corner stores to run to - and even then, the costs for a simple bottle of water might scared you to death. Packing a lunch and a few snacks more than what you think you want...believe us, you'll be sure to come back with items for another picnic.

And if you couldn't afford to get to the Family Reunion this year - we certainly understand, times are hard. A local festival and picnic is THE way to go. Get your blanket, basket, your food and beverages and head to park. If you don't usually listen to opera, now is the time to catch it in the park for fee. Whatever you've thought about doing, don't let finances keep you from appreciating the finer things and joys in life.

Consider all the things we eat and never know the names of half the fillers we digest. Our skin is a largest organ and doesn’t it too deserve proper nourishment? But of course. And thanks to Yolanda Owens, creator of iwi fresh, we can have our skin properly feed with her natural products using fresh fruits and vegetables. Given the freshness, iwi fresh is designed to be used accordingly and keep in the refrigerator. Believe us, it’s worth it.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Hospitals haven’t always been a welcomed place for Blacks, and in the 1950s, going to the hospital was a last resort for many. For Henrietta Lacks, this was definitely the case, as a young married mother of five; she had what would later be discovered as a rapidly advancing cervical cancer. Live cells of her tumor were removed from her body and today survive in laboratories around the world, resulting in a multi-billion dollar industry. This story and its forgotten family are captured by Rebecca Skloot, asking the questions of who, when, where, how and why.

The Protest Psychosis: How Schizophenia Became a Black Disease by Jonathan Metzl

Our circumstances, our history and our realities makes us unique in every facet of our lives. As pointed out in Terry William’s “Black Pain”, rarely do Black people deal with depression and mental health issues in the manner of mainstream America. In addition, we are reluctant to seek help because we feel many professionals will not understand our plight. These are valid concerns that Jonathan Metzl details in “The Protest Psychosis”, thoroughly examining the history of treatment received by patients and the impact racism and class play in those suffering from schizophrenia.

Michelle Alexander tackles the systematic breakdown of education, denied unemployment, and legal ramifications that keep young men automatically bound to a system designed for failure. Ms. Alexander provides a through understanding of mass incarceration beyond what we could have ever imagined.
